Protect America’s Rivers, Lakes and Wetlands: This action is from the website www.5calls.org, but today I am using ResistBot through Facebook Messenger to send a fax. Yes, “5 Calls” is not just a phone app, but a website, too, and you can use ResistBot with Messenger as easily as on your phone. (I learned this from Indivisible Thurston County recently.) ResistBot by phone texting seems to do a better job of remembering who you are though. By Messenger, I had to enter my address several times already. An important tip using ResistBot: If you get ERRORS about your message containing undecipherable characters, replace apostrophes with tick marks and backward and forward quotes with straight quotes.
The action is to contact your representative and senators and urge them to oppose the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to “roll back the Water of the Unites States Rule, a 2015 rule that expanded the bodies of water covered by federal environmental protection laws under the Clean Water Act. The rule extended the environmental protections already provided to large, navigable bodies of water to the smaller waters that flow into them, like rivers, streams, and wetlands. The Obama-era rule was designed to clarify conflicting court rulings. Repealing the rule was a Trump campaign promise.” For more background go to https://5calls.org/issue/receePJu6MS30pEUP.
If calling, 5 Calls has the phone numbers and if using ResistBot, it has the fax numbers. Also, remember our website gives multiple ways to look up contact info at http://www.ssbpf.net/socialactions.html. But here they are again:
- Denny Heck: 202-225-9740
- Maria Cantwell: 202-224-3441
- Patty Murray: 202-224-2621
Here is the suggested phone script from 5 calls:
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from Olympia.
I am calling to oppose the EPA’s planned rollback of the Waters of the United States Rule. Ensuring clean water for all Americans is a national priority that requires federal support, and it is irresponsible to end a rule that protects 1 in 3 Americans’ drinking water sources. I urge [SEN/REP NAME] to fight against the elimination of the Waters of the United States Rule.
Thank you for your work answering the phones.
[IF LEAVING A VOICEMAIL: please leave your full street address to ensure your call is tallied]
I turned this into a thank you fax to our senators like this:
I am writing to thank you for your opposition to the Environmental Protection Agency’s planned rollback of the Waters of the United States Rule. Ensuring clean water for all Americans is a national priority that requires federal support, and it is irresponsible to end a rule that protects 1 in 3 Americans’ drinking water sources. I encourage you to do everything you can to fight against the elimination of the Waters of the United States Rule.
Thank you again for your work representing us.
